From a Complete Novice to a UX Designer - A Journey of Growth, Challenges, and Transformation
In the final semester of my bachelor’s degree, I embarked on an internship that would redefine my career and personal outlook. From January 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a UX Design Intern at MakeMyTrip (MMT) in Gurugram, India, specifically with the MMT Hotels team. This experience was more than just a professional milestone, it shaped me into a confident designer, a better collaborator, and a more outgoing individual.
Stepping into MMT: A New World of Possibilities
Walking into MakeMyTrip’s dynamic office in Gurugram, I was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The open, fast-paced environment was a stark contrast to my usual study routine. As an introvert, I initially found the idea of working in a highly collaborative setting intimidating.
However, from day one, I realized this internship wasn’t just about honing UX skills, it was about adaptability, communication, and growth. I was eager to soak in real-world knowledge, and little did I know, this experience would transform me beyond just design.
Immersing in the UX Design Process
As a UX Design Intern, my role involved enhancing the user experience for MMT’s hotel booking services. The learning curve was steep, but every challenge pushed me forward.
User Research & Problem Solving - I conducted usability testing, competitor analysis, and user interviews to understand pain points.
Wireframing & Prototyping - Using Figma, I designed and refined screens based on user insights and A/B testing results.
Cross-Functional Collaboration - I worked closely with product managers, engineers, and marketers to ensure our designs aligned with business goals and user needs.
Key Project: Enhancing the Hotel Booking Experience
One of my most impactful projects involved simplifying the hotel booking flow to make it more intuitive.
Challenge: Users faced difficulties navigating room options and understanding pricing breakdowns.
Solution: I redesigned the UI for clarity, introduced a progressive disclosure approach, and improved micro-interactions for better user engagement.
Outcome: The updated design received positive feedback from stakeholders and improved the usability score in internal testing.
The Transformative Power of Team Dynamics
While I gained technical expertise, the biggest shift was in my personality and communication skills. Initially, I hesitated to speak up, but MMT’s inclusive and open culture encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone.
Team Bonding Activities - Whether it was game breaks, post-lunch walks, or team outings, these interactions helped me build confidence and friendships.
Weekly Sprint Meetings - Every Monday, we reviewed progress, set new goals, and tackled challenges as a team, helping me understand agile workflows.
Learning from the CPO - I had the privilege of attending strategy sessions with the Chief Product Officer, gaining high-level insights into UX’s role in business impact.
This environment transformed me from an introvert into an extrovert, showing me that UX is not just about design, it’s about collaboration, advocacy, and storytelling.
Lessons Learned & Future Aspirations
Looking back, my internship at MakeMyTrip was a defining chapter in my UX journey. It validated my passion for design and gave me a clear direction for the future.
